Dear Member,
| Leadership Through Learning Highlights |
 |
|
On April 11, FRED welcomed twelve high school
students from across the country to Washington, D.C,
for the Leadership Through Learning (LTL) Program.
Throughout the week, students were on the go visiting
all the major memorials and monuments in the D.C area.
A highlight of the week included a visit to Capitol Hill,
where students were able to meet with their
Congressional representatives and staff.
This year FRED tracked the students' day to day
activities on Facebook and Twitter. This gave parents
and sponsor companies a chance to keep up with
what was going on. If you would like to catch up on the
highlights of the week, head over to FRED's Facebook
page and look through this years photos, videos, and
more!
The 2011 LTL program brochures will be available in
July. If you know a student who will be a junior or
senior next year, please let them know about this
opportunity. There is no cost to the student or the telco
to participate.

| Does Your Local School System Need a Technology Makeover? |
 |
|
The Technology Grants for Rural Schools program was
created to help meet the growing need for innovative
technology in the classroom.
The grants are funded by a donation from Rural Telephone Finance
Cooperative (RTFC) and strive to help public
schools in rural areas served by OPASTCO members
to
bring modern computers to every classroom, connect
schools to the information superhighway and make
sure
that effective and engaging software and online
resources are an integral part of the school
curriculum. This year, $50,000 in grants will be
awarded.
Applications are due back to FRED on September 17.

Scholarship Recipients Receive $75,000 |
|
|
|
Every year, FRED receives exemplary scholarship
applications from the most accomplished and
intelligent students in rural America. And, every year, it
is the Scholarship Committee's difficult task to select
which students will receive awards.
In 2010, FRED was able to award 63 scholarships
ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for a total of $75,000.
FRED is in the process of notifying the nominating
telephone companies with the results. For a full list of
scholarship recipients, please check the FRED
website on May 20.
FRED would like to thank the OPASTCO membership
for making these scholarships possible. Without the
year-round donations via the Annual Giving
Campaign, Dues Donations and FRED Taxes, they
would not be possible.
