2009 Ethyl Grants
FRED's Educational Ethyl Grant program is sponsored by Nortel Networks. The FRED Community Development Ethyl Grant program is sponsored in part by Bennet & Bennet, PLLC. Additional funding for the program comes from the FRED Annual Giving Campaign. Now in its fourth year, the Ethyl Grant program provides matching grants to OPASTCO member telephone companies that are involved with projects aimed at bettering their communities. The grants, ranging from $500 - $2,500 are awarded throughout the year. An estimated $10,000 in funding is available in 2009. Brochures can be downloaded by clicking on the below link.
In 2009, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and will be reviewed at least three time a year.
2009 Ethyl Grant Recipients- May
Community Development Laurel Highland Telephone Company in Stahlstown, Pennsylvania, nominated the Cook Township Community Center for a grant of $2,500. The funding will be used to build a community pavilion that will serve residents from three townships. The pavilion will be located adjacent to the community playground, walking trail and football field that serves as a practice field for 700 midget football players from seven nearby municipalities.
Wahkiakum West Telephone in Rosburg, Washington, nominated the Wahkiakum Community Foundation. Through their grant of $2,500, the foundation plans to provide a chair lift in the Agnes Appelo Memorial Library. The chair will provide access to not only the library, but the Appelo Archive Center as well.
Education Otelco- Mid-Missouri in Pilot Grove, Missouri, nominated the Blackwater R-II School in order to update the school's technology. They received $2,500 that will be used to purchase two smart boards, a projector, and the necessary hardware. Introuducing the new technology to the teachers will help them to engage students in new, hands-on learning methods.
2008 Ethyl Grant Recipients Blanchard Telephone Company in Blanchard, Mich., nominated the Remus Area Historical Society, Inc. for a grant of $750. With the funding, the Society will construct a new display case in their museum. The purpose of the display case is to educate the community and tourists alike on the role of communications in the development of rural areas. Items such as a hands-on switchboard, telegraph machine, old rotary phones, and early phone books may be found in the case.
Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom in Waitsfield, Vt., nominated the Hinesburg Community School. They were given $2,500 to help build a new playground area that will benefit the students at the pre-k through 8th grade schools. The play equipment will also be available to children in at-risk and after school programs, as well as other children in the community.
Chazy Westport Communications in Westport, N.Y., nominated the Chazy Central Rural School, which will use the $1,307.83 grant to purchase the first Smart Board for the school. The smart board will be used to bring an innovative technology to the students in the K-12 school.
Millry Communications in Millry, Ala., nominated the Town of Millry. The $2,500 grant will be used to develop a safe playground area for the children with-in the city's park. Millry Communications has made a donation to the town to that exceeded the match required by FRED. The funds will purchase Spring Riders, a seesaw and a swing set for the park.
South Central Telephone Association Inc. in Medicine Lodge, Kan., nominated the City of Sharon. The grant of $2,500 will be used to construct a wheel chair accessible public restroom and concession stand in between their baseball field and park. SCTelcom is donating labor and equipment to install utility lines.
